PARKRUN REVIEW: WIMBLEDON COMMON (LONDON), ENGLAND

Greg

COURSE INFO AND REVIEW

NOTE: I did this Parkrun in 2021 so route info etc is accurate at that time.

Course Route for Wimbledon Parkrun

This Parkrun is located at Wimbledon Common in a very wealthy part of southwest London. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to take any photos of the course but I got a photo of one of the nearby roads on my drive in to Wimbledon the night before with a view of the London skyline which was very impressive to see.

View of London Skyline

I took the above picture from Marryat Road on my drive in to Wimbledon. It is about a mile from the start point. You can also see Wimbledon Tennis Venue at the bottom of the road.

The course is 2 laps through a mostly wooded area and is pretty flat throughout with some uneven ground in parts. I would describe this as a fairly easy course in comparison to others I have done. I also found out when I was there that this was the 2nd ever park run after Bushy Park.

MY RUN ON THE DAY

I was in this part of London for a Wedding, and so I decided to get another park run done earlier in the day. The start point was nearby the Windmill, and if driving, can be accessed via Windmill Road.

The route was fairly flat and so a quick time is achievable. However the ground underfoot can be a bit unpredictable with puddles and tree roots so they were minor hindrances. I managed to pace this one fairly evenly, slowing down in the middle which is usual for me.

The above photo is from this article: https://www.parkrun.org.uk/wimbledon/news/2019/09/

The week before at my home course, Stretford, I had run 18:39 so I was a little bit disappointed to only run 19:26 at this one, but I was glad to have got under 19:30. Mentally, I prefer it when I can get an idea of the route so it helped being a 2 lap course as you know what to expect after the first lap. The surroundings were pleasant on the run and it had a friendly vibe to it. It also had a bit of an extra prestige to it knowing it was the 2nd ever created Park run.

The winning male time was 16:04 and the fastest female time was 20:19.
