PARKRUN REVIEW: YORK, ENGLAND

Greg

COURSE INFO AND REVIEW

York Parkrun Course Route

York Parkrun is located at York Racecourse to the South West of the City. I was in York for a weekend away so I was staying in the Centre. I jogged to the start point which was around 4km away from the Shambles area within the City Walls.

The course starts and ends at a different point so on the way to the Run I ran down Tadcaster Road until I got to the Holiday Inn/The Fox & Roman Pub and turned left on to Cherry Lane. I didn't see much parking available but it's possible there might be nearby. From the Main Road, it's about 1 min jog down Cherry Lane to the start point at York Racecourse.

Just a quick note about York...it was my 3rd visit and it is one of the nicest Cities in the UK in my opinion, not just the City Centre but even the drive in. One of my favourites.

Below is a picture I took when arriving near the start of the course.

MY RUN ON THE DAY

I was wearing the Nike Streakflys which are branded as 5/10K trainers. I have found that they don't feel anywhere near as quick as the Vaporflys, but they feel quicker than the Nike Pegasus I have. It's rare for me to run without having had cereal about an hour or so before a Parkrun, but I hadn't had chance to eat other than a cereal bar, and given the jog over was 4K, I decided to aim for anything below 19 minutes as my aim rather than aiming for a best effort.

The course is 1.5 laps around the Racecourse and the first lap comes to about 3K, with the next part around 2K. I can imagine this course can get quite windy on a bad day as it is so open but I was fortunate that the wind wasn't too strong. It's a completely flat course so overall i'd say it is a decent course for running quick (unless it is exceptionally windy).

I am not feeling at my fittest for 5K at the moment so did start to tire a bit which was clear on the 4th K as I dropped to above 4:00/km. However, I managed to achieve my aim of sub 19 mins, finishing just under in 18:57.

The fastest male time was a very quick 15:24 and the fastest female time was 20:22.
